Peter Wood is a painter deeply rooted in the landscape and cultural fabric of the Ottawa Valley, from Renfrew, Ontario to Ladysmith, Quebec. His medium of choice—oil pigments mixed with damar varnish, linseed oil, and turpentine on gessoed cotton canvas—allows him to create vibrant compositions that reflect his appreciation for folk art, natural landscapes, and the time-worn patina of everyday objects.
Peter's artistic journey began in his youth, inspired by the raw beauty of the Ottawa Valley and its eclectic mix of cultural artifacts, from wood-fired bread ovens to flow blue crockery and accordions. His work goes beyond mere representation to reveal the greater essence of his subjects, using bold, black contours and intricate patterns to frame still lifes, landscapes, and abandoned houses in a new light. The illusion of depth and reality in his Trompe l'oeil paintings invites viewers to look closer, discovering layers of meaning in the play of shadows and reflections.
Peter Wood's painting style, reminiscent of the bold expressiveness of Marsden Hartley, is enriched with the compositional balance and structural nuances akin to Paul Cézanne. This fusion brings a unique depth to his canvases, where vivid storytelling meets order and perspective, creating a visual dialogue between abstract and classical forms.
Holding degrees from NSCAD University and Queen's University in Fine Arts, Education, and Philosophy, Peter has spent over two decades refining his craft and engaging with a diverse audience that spans from Montreal to the United Arab Emirates and Germany. His commitment to his art is matched by his engagement with his followers, with whom he shares insights into his creative process, upcoming projects, and the stories behind his artworks.
Peter invites you to explore his gallery and join him at his next exhibition, where each painting promises a glimpse into a world where the sum is indeed greater than its parts.
